Crazy in College

Beyoncé made big news in the college scholarship world this week when she announced plans for her Formation Scholars scheme. Four scholarships will be awarded each year to, ‘encourage and support you women who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious and confident.’ Not one mention of GPA averages!

The announcement marks the one-year anniversary of the singer’s album ‘Lemonade’, and has been grabbing lots of headlines — she even got kudos from a certain former First Lady.

Competition will no doubt be tough for the Formation Scholars, but why not throw your hat in the ring. While you’re at it, here are SIX MORE celebrity-linked schemes worth taking a look at:

  1. The Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship Fund
Beyoncé’s ‘special other’ Jay Z has also set up a scheme to hook kids in need up with extra funds to help buy books, lab fees, travel, etc. All Shawn Carter Scholars are required to “give back” by conducting community service and by serving as mentors to younger, aspiring Shawn Carter Scholars. The minimum GPA requirement is 2.0.
  2. The Lebron James Family Foundation
If you’re reading this in Akron, Ohio, you probably already know that Lebron pays for college for thousands of students every year. If you like the sound of the University of Akron, make sure to check this one out.
  3. The Earl Woods Scholarship Program
Tiger Woods might not be dominating the golf scene right now, but the Tiger Woods Foundation is still running this ace scholarship program for high school students (with a minimum GPA of 3.0) who have their sights set on colleges in specific parts of the country.
  4. Christopher Reeve Award
This scholarship fund targets high schoolers who have demonstrated tremendous compassion and caring through service to his or her community. Apply to throw your hat in the ring for a $1,000 scholarship paid by Merriam-Webster Inc.
  5. Ole Miss Opportunity
Eli Manning has funded this scholarship program for residents of Mississippi whose families earn less than $30,000 a year. Designed to fill the gap after federal aid, the scholarship can make life in Oxford at the University of Mississippi a hell of a lot more affordable.
  6. The Alec Baldwin Drama Scholarship
This one is if you’re already a student at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, and targets students with high financial need. Perks include tips at impersonating the President (just kidding!)

Make sure to check the deadlines for next year early, and check back here for more info on celebrities who love you so much they want to give you some of their bajillions of $$$.
